Student Painting – Jola Kedra

Jola Kedra

One of the reasons I absolutely love teaching painting is getting sent emails like the one I just got from Jola Kedra. Jola first took our free five day course to learn about the Moore Method of Painting. She then got all of our painting courses and joined up to the Learn To Paint Club.

Here is what Jola said in her email:

Hi Rod,

I am not sure if I am finished with this one or not yet but that is where I left it last night. I just wanted to share my thrill of finding your school and following your methods of teaching.

I have been painting, mostly tutorials, for a year and a half now. There is a galore of the books and stuff online, but some are total waste of time. Your is so far not. On the contrary, you’re an excellent teacher, clear, simple, concise and easy to follow. Teaching is an art in itself.

Also, I can’t believe you’re a one person business. You film yourself, edit, promote and sell it. Wow! Great inspiration for people like me.

As a kid I dreamed of being an artist but… life took me a different path and I haven’t done anything for some forty years. Going through some not so great time of my life and probably subconsciously, looking for a mental lift from my black, deep hole of hopelessness and despair, I started doodling and soon figured out that I don’t have to wait till I retire to go back to my dreams.

But, yes I have to work to afford pursuing this lost dream of mine, so I don’t have a lot of spare time. Your method is straightforward and makes the use of my time very efficient. Also, the acrylic painting done your method has a fresh, not overworked and overdone look.

Thank you!

Jola Kedra

How To Become A Very Good Painter

What’s the best way to learn how to paint and become a better painter?

I think the key is through learning a few basic skills and steps for constructing a painting, and then repetition of those skills through practice until it becomes automatic and intuitive. In other words, advancing your painting to the point you no longer need to think about it.

What are the basic skills you need?

Well the three big ones we teach in the Moore Method of Painting are Drawing in the Big Shapes, Blocking In, and Details. These are the three steps in the Moore Method.

Within these three steps you need to learn things like:

* Identifying big shapes
* Composition elements
* Drawing Skills (Basic drawing)
* Colour Mixing
* Warm Colours vs Cool
* Values – Use of Dark to Light
* Ariel Perspective
* Edges – Lost & Found
* Highlights
* Detailing & Finishing Touches
* Focal Points
* Brush Technique

If you get to the point were these skills are second nature then you move to a place where you paint from your heart, soul and emotions rather than your thoughts.

We all have to start though consciously learning the skills, understanding the steps, and thinking through each brush stroke.

Chose one source to learn the skills and then practice lots by doing lots of projects. There is no substitute for brush miles.

The new Learn To Paint Club will give you the opportunity to learn the skills, get the practice and get the feedback you need to improve. In time when you join you will develop into a very good artist as well.

We will be launching the Learn To Paint Club in the next day or so.

Michael’s Painting Success

I love getting emails like this and seeing students finish paintings they are happy with. It’s just further proof that the Moore Method of Painting works. Michael has just completed our FREE five day learn to paint course.

Read what Michael had to say below. Well done Michael and I’m looking forward to seeing more of your paintings in the future.

Michael is also now in our monthly draw to win one of our painting courses.

Hi Rod

Thank you for your tutorial, I found it to be very easy to follow and your tips on creating distance in the painting were excellent. I liked your relaxed style and felt at ease following your step by step approach to painting. I am not a beginner but for the last two years I have been trying to learn the art of water colours. I think I have reached a reasonable level but I am never going to be very good.

So I thought I would have a go at this. I had not got any acrylic equipment but I do have some oils, so I followed your instructions using oils and they appeared to work very much the same. The experience has boosted my confidence and I am very keen to try another subject, perhaps a little more complex.

You will notice on my painting that I altered the building, but that was not because I did not like yours but it was just to put my own mark on the picture and not copy yours exactly.

Thanks again and I look forward to the next tutorial.
