November DVD of Month – River Walk

The November DVD of Month is now complete and in the process of being sent to our members.

This month we are painting a scene from several photos I took while out walking along the Barwon River in Geelong. It is an exercise in how to create an interesting painting from a combination of elements in multiple photos.

Our DVD of Month Club members will be learning the process of combining elements from photos. The painting can be done in both oils or acrylics.

The October DVD of Month is now complete and in the process of being sent to our members.

This month we are painting a scene from Monet’s Garden. In July of this year I visited Monet’s home and garden in Giverny which is an hour to the north of Paris. I took hundreds of photos which you can see in the video below:

Our DVD of Month Club members will be learning how to do this view of Monet’s garden from one of my photos taken on the trip. The painting can be done in both oils or acrylics.

July DVD of Month – Farmers Cottage

The July DVD of Month is now complete and in the process of being sent to our members.

This month we are painting this great Australian country scene. In this painting we are using a warm palette to depict a hot summers day, with the old farm house receiving direct sun light. The other feature of this painting is the gum tree which is also a study in how to capture the warm light.

The painting can be done in both oils or acrylics.

June DVD of Month Club

DVD of Month Club – June 2012

Our June DVD of Month Club DVD project is of this great beach fishing scene.

In this project I am using a particular approach by one of my favorite artists Robert Hagan. Roberts approach to a painting is to paint it in two distinct phases … first the setting, then the scene. Then he integrates the two together. Robert is a big believer in storytelling in his paintings and connecting with the viewers emotions. Some great lessons for all of us.

Our DVD of Month club members will be receiving the DVD shortly in the mail.

More Student Paintings

I love it when students of Moore Art School send me pics of their paintings. It is so exciting for me to see everyone learning to paint and making progress.

Everyone starts somewhere and it is only through gaining the basic knowledge and lots of practice that we progress.

Here are some recent student paintings:

This great painting by Lisa Browning is off the St Ives Harbor scene featured in our April DVD of Month Club. Lisa has done a great job with this painting and I particularly like the details on the people in the scene. Well done Lisa.

Well done to Helen Mullan who is returning to painting after many years. In the above painting she has painted the 'Summers Finally Here' from the March DVD of Month Club. Helen has done a terrific job especially with her clouds and contrast on the horizon.

Michelle Endersby continues to make great improvements. Above is her version of the "Summers Finally Here" painting. I just love the highlights on the rocks on the right hand side. This is Michelle's second attempt at this painting following our video critique of her first version. Terrific to see Michelle taking on board a lot of the ideas we shared with her … little things like the shadow under the water foam giving it more of a 3 dimensional look. Well done Michelle.

This is another of Michelle's paintings … it is of The Bluff in Barwon Heads. This painting is the first painting we did in the Plein Air Painting TV show and it comes as a bonus DVD in the DVD of Month Club. The painting is done on MDF board and if you have never painted on board before it can be a little tricky to get used to. Michelle has done a great job for her first painting on board.

This great painting is from Lincoln McCann who painted this from the Free Painting Videos we give away. I love the fact that Lincoln has created his own version of this painting. His eye for detail is terrific and I especially like the foreground tree on the right hand side with the magpie. Well done Lincoln.

Alpine Mountains – DVD of Month

Alpine Mountains – DVD of Month

The May DVD of Month is of an Alpine Mountain scene. This painting is all about creating ariel perspective in a painting with the distant mountains, plus it focuses on the S shape composition which has been traditionally used in landscape painting for hundreds of years.

This is a great exercise to learn how to do a grand landscape and is probably best done on a larger canvas.
